![]() garage duo Disclosure’s “You and Me.” One of the most popular examples of original future bass, however, is The Chainsmokers’ 2016 summer anthem “Closer,” co-written with Freddy Kennett of Louis the Child and performed with Halsey. According to Rolling Stone, it “drops like dubstep” and “pulses like pop” - a much more nuanced, romantic musical fusion between pop and electronic.įlume himself has delivered future bass to the masses with original records like “Never Be Like You” and the remix of U.K. Unlike tropical house, however, future bass is much broader sonically, featuring a wide range of sounds woven together by a strong bassline and synthesizers. Similarly, future bass has risen as one of the most prominent examples of EDM fusing into other main genres. Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez’s chart-topping single “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” Disclosure and Lorde’s “Magnets” and Zedd and Liam Payne’s “Get Low” are all just a few examples of how tropical house has thrust itself into pop radio and blurred the lines of musical categorization.Īrt by Shideh Ghandeharizadeh | Daily Trojan The past three years have been big for tropical house. ![]() Conversely, pop artists also played a major role in its rise, specifically Justin Bieber, who formally introduced it to Top 40 listeners with “Sorry” and “What Do You Mean?” in his 2015 album Purpose. On one end, Kygo, hailed as tropical house’s ultimate pioneer, pushed the subgenre into pop music through collaborations with artists such as Ellie Goulding (“First Time”) and Marvin Gaye (“Sexual Healing” remix). Tropical house - a brighter, smoother offshoot of deep house - has taken pop by storm in the past two to three years, thanks to producers and DJs like Kygo and Robin Schultz. EDM-influenced sounds are omnipresent - and whether people like it or not, it’s a visible indicator of pop music’s evolution, as well as EDM’s emergence from the subcultural realm. In the same vein, electronic dance music has permeated through the sphere of pop music, gradually propelling itself into the mainstream and redefining its own cultural boundaries through the commercialization of two particular subgenres: tropical house and future bass. Music events like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which began as a fringe gathering for rock and alternative fans, have become cultural hallmarks, bringing artists across the spectrum and attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Streaming is now the backbone of the music industry, with Spotify monopolizing the entire market. The music industry has evolved over the past couple of years, not only in consumer patterns, but also in the content itself. ![]() But as I scrolled through my “dreams” Spotify playlist for inspiration to write this week’s column, I realized that this preconceived notion was no longer the case. ![]() The point is, I had always viewed music as being parsed and segmented by genres, each with its own unique, distinctive sound. One for electronic music: Porter Robinson, Gryffin, Snails, Zomboy, Jai Wolf (granted, there’s a wide range here). One for pop: Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Niall Horan, Ariana Grande. I used to create separate Spotify playlists for different genres I wanted to listen to, depending on my mood. Until recently, I had considered myself a musical purist.

Smile has continually strived to improve this product, which I regard as the 'Swiss Army Knife' of PDF tools, and continually releases free updates and occasional major fee based upgrades, often spaced years apart. I am an early adopter of PDFpen and upgraded when PDFpenPro was released, I still remember when Smile Software was nothing but a small kiosk at MacWorld., which is where I first purchased it, Since then may other less capable 'competitors ' have come and gone often with great ideas and promises but with little to show for them. Having seen a number of PDF products either released or upgraded recently and many of these costing between $10 & $100 triggered this review: I am happy investing in a good product that would provide me value long term and don't want to have to constantly switch, buy, and learn how to use new apps to have it accomplish what I need. Another alternative is to buy various apps piecemeal but the cost, time, and maintenance is even higher than just paying for PDFpenPro and upgrading every year. You want pretty or you want a workhorse? Frankly, I don't think a PDF editing program should be a subscription program unless it is web-based or there is some server or Cloud service involved where you are sharing data across a team of users and security is a concern. PDFelement seems to use other brands to marketing their own product and their quality is poor. PDFpen Expert as subscription without OCR, without form creation capabilities, without export features is a bit too high for a pretty UI. Adobe is too expensive and non-intuitive. The alternative is to lock yourself into yet another subscription. Smile's upgrade cost is pretty reasonable for their work. If you find the app useful, I think it is worthwhile to make sure you are running the latest version. I've seen great apps or apps with potential come and go because the developers can no longer support the app- very sad thing. It takes resources to create and develop software. Nothing of quality is free and needs maintenance. They also send you an email when they release a major version to let you know. For those who "accidentally" upgrade, there is a notice informing users when it is a paid upgrade. You are not "locked-in" to a subscription, and the app is yours forever. I am looking forward to additional developments of PDFpenPro that can bring the app even closer to the offerings of Acrobat, but better than Acrobat.Īs more and more developers are going subscription, I don't mind the optional $30 upgrade to the next major version. Bugs? All apps have bugs and PDFpenPro seems to have less of it over time since they've been around for awhile, but a responsive developer who really works to address it is much appreciated. I contact support regularly if I come across any issues and they are very responsive. For instance, with PDFpenPro, I can create interactive forms, apply digital signatures, batch OCR, and with the latest version, view the same document in two screens! Someone mentioned it is the swiss-army knife of PDF editors for Mac and I agree 100%. Other apps have better marketing, but PDFpenPro really gets the job done. I am a long-time user of PDFpenPro but have also used Adobe Acrobat and other competing apps. ![]() This is definitely the best alternative to Acrobat Pro. First impressions are that Atom RPG looks and moves nicely, keeping that old school kind of look and feel. So, having made your character, it’s here where you set out to see what you can find. Obviously, the way you build your character affects what you can do in game, and so these choices matter. If you’ve played these types of games before you’ll know that you can build a variety of characters from these seven basic parameters, whether that be a knuckle dragging neanderthal with very high strength, or a weedy scientist type with high intellect. You have a series of points, as is traditional, to allocate to various stats, such as strength, endurance, dexterity and so on. Straight off we are thrown into the character generator, and my goodness is it a detailed one. So, Atom RPG is already on a good wicket. Now, I have to put my hand up here and say that I do really enjoy an RPG, a JRPG, a CRPG, or anything of that type. We need to talk to people, undertake side missions, fight nasty creatures and bad people, and generally stay alive… And that’s the entire setup – we are given a location to go to, and the rest of the investigation is up to us. The only drawback for me was that the actual game was missing from the box, this is why I am mixed on this review. Two controllers are included which is a big plus. The Gears system is fantastic looking, the machine is quiet and has built in wi-fi. So I needed a new Xbox 360 since my old system contracted the dreaded ring of death. I did my online research, and removing the HDD and replacing it back seemed to have helped the issue for a good day or two.īut then, it restarts on it's own again! But beware, you must go to the site and transfer your licenses over before you start your official transfer on your HDD. Now, after receiving this brand new Gears of War 3 Xbox 360 Slim, I opened up the package and had an orgasmic reaction due to the fact that I planned on purchasing it ever since the first day of it's announced release.īefore giving my friend my old 360, I transferred everything from my old 60 Gig HDD into my brand new 320 Gig HDD. ![]() So I purchased this around the first week it came out to replace my console that I've had since December of 2008, which is the Kung Fu Panda/Lego Indiana Jones 60 Gig HDD Xbox 360, which has now been passed down to my good friend that has been dying to get a 360 of his own for a long time now. ![]() ![]() These decisions are common enough to make you feel involved and engaged in the narrative, and the number of alternative scenes that are available does mean that there are quite a few different stories to experience - even if they are all rooted by the same underlying storyline. In this manner, it's a unique look at the BR genre.Īs this is an interactive movie, the gameplay basically revolves around making simple decisions at various points, which in turn, will determine the next movie scene you get to witness. With this in mind, the game not only approaches how Romeo and the other contestants experience being in a dangerous battle royale, but it also takes a look at how the viewers and the community respond to the actions of the company running the show, as well as the revelations that unravel as you progress the storyline. In Bloodshore, this is less of the case, as you begin to learn that contestants have joined the programme as a last resort, and that the company who runs the barbaric event shows no sign of empathy for human life, and are the reason behind countless deaths over the years that the show has been airing. In a lot of BRs, the idea of a group of individuals fighting it out like gladiators to be the last man standing is quite a heroic feat. Unlike a traditional BR, Bloodshore approaches the topic in a little more controversial manner. The story follows Romeo's journey across the island and details his encounters with other players, as well as revealing that he has alternative motives for being on the Kill/Stream broadcast, motives that you begin to learn will change the way the world operates if they come to light. Known as Bloodshore, this title puts you into the shoes of the forgotten actor Nick Romeo, who has chosen to join the annual Kill/Stream programme (the name of the show that runs the battle royale) for a shot at the eternal glory that awaits the victor. |
